Monsoon Rag's Handy Sizing Guide
If you have any questions about sizing, please email us at email@example.com Also we are more than happy to pull out a tape measure for questions about a garment of interest.
Please refer to the info section on each of our garments, as there were some fabric width limitations meaning that some designs are the same length for all sizes – so will look shorter when worn by people bigger than size 8. Particularly the Guatemalan dresses and the Cambodian Hoi Silk Tango Skirts.
There is no one cardboard cut-out ‘normal’ woman shape, we are not all clones of one another! Have you discovered that one brand may be a perfect fit for your size, while another just never sits right? I certainly have!
For Monsoon Rags sizing, we have chosen what I have guessed will be a fairly typical bust, waist and hip ratio of our predicted type of customer. I’m imagining a fairly active, adventurous woman who has a fit and healthy figure, who is not super-skinny, but not super curvy either.
If you are curvier than our choice of female shape (don’t despair!), a fix would be to order a size that won’t be tight anywhere (bust or bottom), and have a dressmaker alter the garment for a perfect fit. Check our sizing measurements, measure yourself, and choose the size that won’t be too tight anywhere. You may need to order a size that is one up from your favourite curvier shaped brands, but it’s so much easy for a dressmaker to take in a loose garment, than to let seams out and have them fray and pull out later on. Please note, none of our garments are made from stretch fabrics.
If you are skinnier than our choice of female shape, it’s an easy fix. Just order your size – height and hips are probably the biggest considerations, and have a dressmaker take in the roomier areas of the garment. This is my problem, I have to alter most off-the shelf garment purchases for a better chest and back fit.
Warning: if the size you ordered is too tight, it’s not a great idea to let the seams out. The seams are exactly the right width to ensure that the fabric will not fray and pull out from seams – especially the silk fabrics. So letting out seams is most likely going to reduce the life of your garment and end in tears. Please don’t! Contact us for a size swap and we’ll sort you out.
Also, if you are a size 6 or 16 + and are interested in our designs, we would love to hear from you. If we receive a number of requests for sizes outside of those we stock (8, 10, 12, 14), we will certainly look to add those to future collections.
