Cambodian Hoi silk fabric is dyed and woven all by hand in the traditional ikat style and is simply stunning! This fabric can be found in a large variety of colours, with patterns varying from tiny and complex to large and bold. Cambodian hoi silk is commonly woven in 1.75 to 3.5m length pieces, intended to be made into the long traditional skirts by women at very formal occasions. I’ve always dreamed of designing this striking and culturally unique fabric into a modern design, enabling it to be enjoyed elsewhere in the world. The colours of the fabric I have selected from Cambodia are muted-vibrant (if you can imagine that), being not luridly bright, and not at all dull. The fabric weight is relatively heavy compared to the more commonly available hand-woven fine silks of the region, however is not stiff like taffeta silk.
The design of the Cambodian Hoi Tango Skirt is gathered and full, with fine silk charmeuse lining hand-dyed by me in colours to match each piece of Hoi silk that we purchased. This fabric is narrow, so skirts cannot be made longer for taller people. Instead, these skirts are designed to be worn around the waist for smaller people, and around the hips for bigger people. Please refer to the skirt length to see if you will be happy with the length of this skirt for your size.
One aspect of working with hand-woven fabrics is that often designs need to consider challenges such as narrow fabrics, and tricky to work with patterns. If you would prefer your larger-sized skirt to be worn around the waist (if it will be long enough for you), just ask a dressmaker to take your skirt in at the waist.
This style of silk fabric can be found in some absolutely gorgeous colours and patterns, of which I collected several during a recent trip to Cambodia. I wonder what I’ll design next in this fabric? Only 2-4 skirts could be made for each uniquely patterned piece of hoi silk that I purchased, so these are quite limited editions!

Note: The length of our Tango skirts is 50cm, with the waist band designed to fit at the waist for small sizes, and around the hips for larger sizes. Fabric width was the limitation. Please check this length on yourself to see if you will be happy with the length of this skirt for your size. The monsoon Rags fairy is a size 7-8, so the skirt will sit higher than on our images for taller people.

This scarf is larger - longer and wider than the Vietnamese ruby scarf (similar colour), and is made of more durable fabric. It is simply divine to wear being very soft silk fabric, and the colour is a gorgeous shade of red being vibrant but not too bright.
If you are choosing between the Cambodian and Vietnamese silk scarves, the Vietnamese scarves are like a second skin. They are not bulky, and basically once draped around your neck and shoulders, it is easy to forget that they are there. The Cambodian soft silk scarves (red & rust colours avail) are slightly thicker fabric, more durable, are longer and wider so are bulkier. These ones are there to be seen, and are a bit more substantial. Depends on what you are after! I like wearing both types, but depends on the occasion.
